http://karl190793.wix.com/karlmossmedia This is the link to my final portfolio ready for hand in.
There is maybe a lack of content concerning my videos. But there is some videos that I have that are ready for editing or some that I want to make sure I do my own edit. The reason I have taken this decision is because at this current stage I don't think they are good enough to go on my site or portfolio but once I have sorted them out I will be adding them on to the site. The videos I will be adding are my current project that I am doing at clifton campus at Nottingham Trent and my "Made In Nottingham" project. Im hoping that once they are done it will allow me to justify calling myself a camera operator and editor.
I added photography to my page because I want to bulk up my content I had justified my reason for adding it is because I feel that photography and video have very similar themes when you have to think about the rule of thirds and depths of field for example. But overall Im pleased with my photography as it is a working process at the moment and one thing I have enjoyed this year is working with Danny Kaye

Feedback From Peers
Today I have been asking for some comments regarding colours on my website. My current design is a lemon shape background with blue writing. I asked the people on my course to give some feedback. The background has been something which is quite popular and worked well which is pleasing but people have claimed there has been problem with the blue and that they have found it difficult to read and that the font could do with changing. So this is something I will look at doing.

From the feedback regarding my lemon background is quite pleasing for me the reason I did this is because a lot of the practitioners I have looked at mainly use a black and white background so I feel that doing a yellow background makes my site out and its quirky. In the future I may look at doing a logo based around a lemon. Maybe make this part of my brand.
So this is my original homepage with the blue writing. For myself it works because the blue and yellow seem to work together but as other people have commented on it I have decided to look into trying some other colours to see if I can improve on this.
I have decided to go with purple instead because I feel that with the yellow and purple being contrasting colours it means that the text will stand a little easier to read. I have also changed all the text to Times New Roman and removed the shadow so this will not effect the readers when they are reading my site. I will then apply this to all my pages after to keep a running theme though out my work.

Other feedback regarding my was that my buttons at the top of the page where a bit large. I had changed the original menu because I felt that the writing was a little small and by changing to buttons it would allow the viewer to scroll though the pages a little easier but I have adjusted them to a smaller size now.

Thinking About My Photography
I have taken the decision to add a bit of photography onto my page. For me I love taking pictures of nature and landscapes. The reason behind this is because it is very natural and can't be altered when taking the image. I think to develop my photos I will look to experiment with photoshop a bit more to give some of my images that little bit of an edge.
So adding photos to my site I will just adding pictures of some of the flowers I have seen a various other photos current I am using a lensbaby composer pro sweet 35mm and Canon 40mm f/2.8.

Adjusting My Portfolio From Feedback
From getting feedback for my portfolio one thing I had not thought about was what it would look like on a mobile. When i had sent my portfolio out for feedback I had not thought about what it would look like on a mobile. Lucky on Wix it allows you to adjust it for mobile as well as desktop which is something that is pretty helpful because it means there is more access to my site and for example if you wanted to show your work to someone you had met instead of having to pull out a laptop and show it you can load it up on your mobile there and show your work and its pretty simple to sort out in the editing process on the site.

Reason I Haven't Used A Logo
After giving some of my peers some feedback one thing that I have noticed is peoples use of logos for their sites. This is one thing I have not done so far. If I am being honest it isn't something that I had not thought about doing. A logo is something that can make you more noticeable and makes you more of a brand or product.
For now I will not a use a logo in my work until for maybe a year or two. My reason behind this is because I want to build up more a portfolio and clients before I start thinking about logos. But once I have got to that level then I will think about doing a logo to include of my website, videos and pictures for example. For now I just want to keep it simple by just being myself and allowing my work to be more of my brand instead of my logo.

Making Adjustments To My Portfolio
I am looking at changing various items on my portfolio website. One of the first things that I have looked at doing is adding a photography page. The reason I want to look at doing this is because one thing that is similar between photography is doing the frame work for the picture of the video.
In sense it should make work that having both photography and video shows my frame work is up to scratch. For myself personally i think that my video is much stronger then my photography but I feel that my photography is something that is a working process so when I am thinking about the context of my development i think that is something I can add to my strengths.
Though my main love remains with cinematography and editing which is something I have enjoyed doing in my time during university and outside. But now I have started to experiment with different lens such as 40 mm, 35 mm, 24-105 mm for example I have got a new look at my work from always using the 50mm or 18-55mm which I have regularly used during my time at university. The whole journey is meant to be that I have developed from first starting. I remember coming to university interview with some still images that I had done on a disposal camera. But when I think about it I was pleased with that work because unlike on a digital camera you have to make sure you get the picture perfect because you can't go back and delete and re take the picture.
Another thing I will look into changing is the sizes of the buttons on the page because I feel that at this current state that they are a little on the small size and that if i change them to be a bit bigger it will allow the viewer to look though the site a bit easier. Im waiting for other feedback to help improve on my work.

Another Practitioner
http://mattprior.tv/
Matt Prior is a Camera Operator from Sussex. What I like about his site is the detail that has gone into it. He has given a description of himself and his work which ranges from promo videos to music videos. He has a nice showreel on his site so people can get a feel off his work and what he is all about. The only thing I don't like is the grey background on his site I think its a dull and a bit of turn off as if i was looking at this I would be a little put off.
But once you start looking into his work he has got range on content on his site to please the audience below is just a taste of some of his work. Once again because of some of the bright colours on his site it highlights the grey even more so one thing I will look to do in terms of my website is looking at making a brighter site in terms of my background.

One more page that he has included on his website is a little about his equipment. On one of my prototypes I have wrote about what equipment I use but in reflection I don't think I will do this. My reason for this is because if a company hires you without knowledge of the equipment you have it seems pretty useless having a list equipment the only way I could justify having that in there is if you are going to give some context to the actual equipment and how it could benefit a company and why they should hire you. This is something he has not done

Portfolio Update
One of the aspects of my current module doing my portfolio is learning to become a lot more a analytical in how I develop my ideas and give more reason. So far during my research into my portfolio I have just done stuff that for my visually I like and not gave a bit more reason as to why I have chosen this ideas I have gone for so far.
To help me give a bit more justice as to why I have gone with the concepts I have for it is a case of doing a bit more research into current practitioners and learn what current established practitioners have on their websites or blogs for example. By doing this it will allow me the chance to develop my current idea.
One practitioner I have researched so far is Scott Houston but i never really went into fully why I liked his site and why I have followed his kind of website. On his home page he has got a little bit about himself with links to some of his work. This is something on my website that I haven't done. But this is something I may change. My reason for doing this is because as soon as someone looks at my website I want them to be able to look at who I am straight away instead of having to look at other pages on my site to look at. This could be a case of just writing about who I am, writing about my skill set and what equipment i use. He does have a more detailed about page where he writes what work he does and how he has built up his skill set over a period of time. It also has links to social media sites of his.
He then has a page with a show reel of some his best work which is something I have done. Show reel is something that will change over time(hopefully) the more projects I can get involved the more i can add. While he has done a show reel he has also shown a variety of different work of his on a separate page. Which is something I have done but personally I feel i could add more to the page but for now I am happy with what I have added. He has also added a list of his clients which as a freelancer makes sense because he is showing how he has built up his impressive portfolio for me right now I can't really add a client list because a lot of the work I have done is for my university so it is more of a case showing my work in the video sections and highlighting my current skills.
On my site I have got like a blog section which I will be using to write more about current projects I am involved in. I think it is important to show potential employees or clients that you are always doing something instead of waiting for something to just come along. This is also a good way of showing your work behind the camera like how you prepare etc.
and finally one more thing I have included is how to contact me via email for any enquiries

Reviewing My Feedback For My Portfolio
The feedback for my interim portfolio has highlighted the fact i need to start thinking a lot more critically about work. Though this is something I don't personally enjoy it is something I should do. Another thing i need to make sure i start looking at is making sure I realise what I should include in my work and why it is important I do this.
Because I want to get into work within the video world it is vital that I show a variety of different skills and a range of different videos I have worked on to showcase I have gained different skills though out each video. But I have to figure out why I need to do this by looking at a range of different practitioners and how they have set up there portfolios and how it can base my site on this. This way I can give a justification as to why I have done it the way I have done my site in a similar way.
Other feedback was just making sure that I give my videos on my site a bit grading and correction which is something I will probably look into doing on after effects. But my only concern is because I have put in on to a YouTube channel that it will be squashed down and have a grainy effect.

Pages On My Portfolio
This will be a review on the pages I have chosen to use on my portfolio
This is my homepage the reason I have chosen to use the yellow is because i feel it is a warm inviting colour and the lemons are something that stand out. I hope for a viewer that when they enter the site they feel the same.
My next page is where I have just done a bit about myself and what kind of work i do. I feel by doing this i have shown a personal touch and making a viewer more welcome instead of professional. The reason I have done this is because I have not built up enough of a professional work to warrant doing it that way. In two years time for example I could look at changing this when I could change it so its written in a more biographical way.
The next page is my show reel. On here I have looked at getting some of my best work. I am going to be selling myself as a camera operator and cinematographer so the work i want to include in the video is variety of pretty good framing and visually look appealing to a viewer. This way during an interview I can explain how I went about getting this shot and talk about my role during the production.
The next part of the video is some of my work. On the page before I have a show reel which only show a snapshot of myself. The reason I have included both is because I want to show a variety of my work. On the videos I have included so far is a interview which I did. This is one of my first productions I had been involved in. The second is my Paul Smith video which I directed and I feel this is one of my strongest work. The last is a video which I filmed for Trent TV and this show a range of shots and framing.
I have chosen to use a blog page on my site to keep my work up to date. This can show what work I am currently up to and one thing I may look into doing is putting reviews of films or videos for example.
Then the last part is my contact page with my email this is so if anyone does have any enquiries they can email me.

INTERIM PORTFOLIO HAND IN (Second Portfolio)
Today is my hand in for interim portfolio. I decided to go with a more bright background the reason for this is because I want my website to stand out a little. Also because the background is yellow it will hopefully help bring out the blue a lot better as its a good contrast(Just look out on a sunny day if you don't believe me)
The site consists of six different pages currently. There is a home page
For now I have decided against using any social media in my portfolio. I will wait for feedback from Jools or Danny but hopefully this will give me time to develop my work and ideas a bit more to have better content on my site or change of layouts for example.
below is a link which contains my current show reel as of today obviously this may change in a matter off weeks.

FIRST PROTOTYPE FOR PORTFOLIO ON WIX

Prototype On Moon Fruit
As I have said I was going to look into building one of my prototype portfolios on MoonFruit. I have found the process a bit of struggle because the site though it seems simple at times can be a bit difficult. When looking at changing things on the site it takes a while to click on the item that you need. When i want to add a video from my youtube on the page it is not coming up properly and it has meant that I have not been able to put the video on which I feel is one of my most strongest work.
Saying that though once you manage to get a hang of it the design is a lot easier to use because first of all it is a simple and professional design and it has managed to get what I want onto the page. Below is the home page to the website its a nice clean and easy design and the reason I have gone for black and white is because it means the writing is then easy to read. It has got my showreel on their so straight away the viewer is getting to know a little bit about me and some of the work I have done on in the form of a showreel

(HOMEPAGE)
Then the next page is an extended about me section on here i have wrote about myself in a lot more detail I have wrote about being a graduate. I have included a what kid i currently own as I feel it is important that once you are thinking about becoming free lance for example that the person hiring you knows what you are going to be using and if you are suitable for their project.
(ABOUT ME)
Once I had wrote about me I thought I would put a bit about myself work by showing some videos of my work for now I have included three different videos(for now) I may change this too include four. The videos I have put on so far have got a mix of corporate style videos with Boo Boo Kitty. The second which some reason I couldn't get to go up was my Paul Smith video which shows a strong sense of cinematography. Then the last one was the Max Stone video which shows elements of both the other videos in one.
(WORK)
The last page was just about getting in touch with me over work which makes senses because without it there is no way of people being able to talk to you about your work.

What I Want On My Portfolio?
After looking at the work of other practitioners I have decided to narrow down what I want on my portfolio. The work I have been looking at is those who have a keen interest in video work. So in the portfolio I want to show that I have an interest in things such as cinematography in my work. This means explaining a bit about myself and some of my work.
Here is how I want the pages to go:
The first page I want is a homepage with a picture of me initially.
The second page will be the about me section where I can write a bit about my work and what my main career aims are.
The third and fourth pages will either be some of my work and a show reel. I may look at adding the show reel to my home page but that depends on how feedback goes. The work I will be put on will be between three and four different videos. I will look to add some of my stronger work such as the Paul Smith video for example
The next page will be about contacting me via email which people can email me regarding work

Feeback On First Edit For Qmc
Today we got feeback on our video for the QMC placement video. During the shoot i feel that nothing really went wrong but obviously it is always important to get feedback to see where things can be improved.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1OZ_tVplnU&feature=youtu.be here is a link to the first rough edit
As I didn't do the edit it was also my first time seeing the video and straight away the first thing i picked up was the standard of the audio. I had used an external microphone for the video but in hind sight I think it would be more valuable to use a better external mic such as a radio microphone. Another thing I want to change about the edit is changing the pacing so have it mixed between the students and the staff as i feel the last part of the video is a long and if it is a bit more mixed we could first of all bring the time of the video down as well to about three and a half minutes. Another thing i would do is use the same lens for the straight on shots and cut aways as that way though out the video it keeps the same consistency.
When I pitched the video to a focus group to get their opinion I got similar feedback. Straight away it was brought up that the audio when the girls are talking is a bit quite and that the music can be a bit distracting from the important interview. The cut aways we have got are good but just need to be a bit more stabilised and maybe slowed down. Other things that can be changed are doing things such as colour grading and just changing the pacing of the video slightly.
But we did get positive feedback on the use of the music as keeping it with a fun kind of theme at the start it works. Our intro's for the girls in the interview are good and brings out the positive message for the course. The backgrounds are fun and interesting and but doesn't take the focus away from the people that are being interviewed.

WIX
The second domain website I have been looking at is WIX. I have to say so far I have prefered it to the Moon Fruit website that I have used the last few days. Similar to the MoonFruit it has a wide range of different pages you can use ranging from Once I had signed up it allowed me to have a pick of various different templates that i can start from as shown below
In the corner you can see there is a quick selection where you can find what you are looking for in terms of a template for your page. I typed in video portfolio which helped me narrow down what I want to use below is what come up
I liked the look of the first page on the site so I have decided to use this to build up my second portfolio
This is the home page for the site. So far I am liking it layout a bit better then moonfruit. Firstly it is a lot easier to to change things on the site and the HTML 5 means a lot of it is just dragging and dropping it will be intresting to see how it develops once I have started sorting out my work to see what it looks like. One thing I will say I'm not a fan of the background I think it is a bit dark and I have to admit I do prefer the more simple black and white writing which has been used my some of the practitioners I have looked at so far.
The menus at the side have a variety of links you can add to your site such a social media, videos and pictures and images and gives you the option of building up a better stronger site and making it your own.
Like MoonFruit it is free to build your site but you can upgrade this includes a free domain, ad free. I think having a domain is something that can be very important because it means you can have that brand recognition and means finding your site becoming a lot easier
Once I have made a prototype for this I will upload it on here.

MoonFruit.com
Looking at where to develop my site will be key. There is various I have been looking at such as Wix.com.. But one wesbite I have come across is MoonFruit. It allows you to build up a website for free. Which for me is something that is quite interesting because this is a great chance for me to get my work out on a public domain for people to see.
As you can see from the page before there is a range of different pages you can pick to start your website from. This can range from a gardening and travelling site. One page I have come across is one called something called minimalist. Because one thing I want to do is make sure that my website is something and a viewer can use it this is something I want to look into.
So once I've clicked on minimalist it then comes up with this page above.
One of the things I have noticed though even though it says it is free you are only allowed to make one website with it unless you upgrade it. So this might mean me looking at using wix as my main source for my portfolio. But for now I will give MoonFruit a go just to see what the quality is like.
Once on the page you get four pages come up. The first page is a home screen. It has an about section on it. Then there is a work page where you can add youtube links to your work with a description of what should be on the site. Then there is also a contact page where people have got enquirers.
I will update my blog once I have started a site doing a prototype of my site on here. But one more site I want to look at doing is wix which i feel could be a little easier to navigate.
One of the things I have noticed though even though it says it is free you are only allowed to make one website with it unless you upgrade it. So this might mean me looking at using wix as my main source for my portfolio. But for now I will give MoonFruit a go just to see what the quality is like.

Looking At A Practitioner
http://www.calthomson.com/
Cal Thomson is a freelance camera operator and editor from Manchester. In his about me section he has decided to use a third person description. I think the reason behind this is because he is selling himself more as a practitioner. For me personally I think at first I will be doing mine in first person because when people enter my site I want a more friendly approach and at this current time I don't feel I have enough clients to warrant a third person approach. I feel once I have built up a better amount of work that I could then ask clients for example to give me a reference on my work which I could put on my website. He has also a wrote about his background work and equipment. Once again this is selling himself as a freelancer for me at this moment I think my main aim is actually looking for work and freelancing could be something that is more of a side project.
His showreel which is in the link below is a great example of what I want to aspire to in a few years. He has got a good blend of independent work such as short films. Corporate work such as promotional videos. For me I want to get into a position like this is because I in terms of the future I would maybe look into getting into more freelance work which could help me bulk up not just my work and showreel but my experience but I think going into the work I think I could do more experience of bigger scale productions to help me

Potential New Client
Today I got in contact with Phil Nodding as i was worried by the none reply by Sean Macaskill from The Hive. However when i met him he offered my a client based project at Clifton. I will be receiving a brief from Phil tomorrow and this will then lead to a meeting with him and the two first year students from the Fda.
Hopefully this will allow me a good project and will allow me to move my current client project back to a later date where i feel i will have more time to sort out a plan and have a bit more free time to film and edit the video.

Researching For My Portfolio
The start of research into my portfolio meant I had to think about what line of work I want to go into. My experiences so far have had me been involved in a variety of roles such as camera operator, director of photography, runner just to name a few. Doing research into some practitioners has kind of opened my eyes a bit about where I currently am as a practitioner. I feel with the time I have left I want to get involved with a few more different projects
http://www.scotthouston.co.uk/- Scott Houston is a freelance camera operator and editor based in Glasgow his website is something that I enjoy watching his work. It is polished and has great colour grading. As you can see by his homepage he has got splash shots of some of his work he has done. Personally I don't think I will be doing this for my website because i don't feel currently I have enough work of a high quality. But obviously I'm hoping once I grow as a practitioner it will allow me to develop my show reel and work. So what I will do to for my site is having a show reel of some of my work and just had a few splash shots of videos I have done. But as a great reference this has given me a lot. The colour scheme is black and white so I think because he does video work it always makes me think of VHS videos are a source of inspiration.

PORTFOLIO PLANNING ARGHHHHHHHH
On the 6th March we have to deliver a plan of what we want to our portfolio too look like. It has something that has troubled me for a little bit because if i am being honest I am not sure how i want it to look right now so I will be starting a bit of research into different practitioners sites to determine a few of the basic things such as:
-Content
-layout
-background (Colours maybe a problem due to being colour blind)
I think I will have a website for my portfolio because I feel that is a something that seems a bit more professional and in terms of access and applying for jobs you have something visual for them to see.

Methodologies (Negotiated Client Project)
Today I am back in Nottingham and our first seminar was learning about four different methodologies which i will be using when it comes to my negotiated client project. They are SCAMPER, User Centred Design, Ethnography and Creative Practice.
SCAMPER stands for:
Substitute
Combine
Adapt
Modify
Put to another use
eliminate
Reverse
Personally when putting this to a product i feel the purpose off it is to take a product and improve on it or taking two products and then combining then into one. I got two examples for this the first one was the selfie stick it has taken the craze of big group selfies and then the stick allows it to make doing it a whole lot easier. My second example was Coca-Cola which has used the original brand and added different flavours and the using the method you can reverse it for example and still have the original coca-cola brand.
User Centred Design (UCD)
This is where the end product is designed for the need of the user. every aspect of the video will be designed to allow the user get what is required from the product. This more common use for something to with software but I believe that it can be put to use with a video and a client. It is simply taking the brief and using the same thinking process. The first part of it is making sure you know who your target market is once you have established this it is then a case of making sure that all the work done from that point is used for your target market. This means that doing things such as questionnaires will become important. My two examples for this were the editing keyboard. this has taken the aspect of using a simple keyboard but making it so in edit suites it can be used to help with products such as premier pro. My second example was Fotmob which is a football app but allows the users to keep updated on their favourite team aswell as live football scores.
Ethnography
This is where a practitioner will spend a certain amount of time in a "alien" environment which will hopefully allow them the time to get to know the people a lot better and even at times feel sympathy for a certain extreme group for example. For this i used the example of Louis Theroux who usually spends long amounts of time getting to know certain cultures which are usually seen as extreme or not well liked. My other example of this was to the "Benefit Street" documentary which allowed to us to get a better insight to what people living on the dole live like and at times you warm to the people even if they are doing bad things.
Creative Practice
To me this is where as a practitioner we take our own creativity into our own work and work out a style that we like. Anytime we do a project or something it is allowing a creative thoughts to flow a bit more
